Botnet

A botnet is a network of hijacked computers and devices that criminals control remotely, often without the owners noticing.

Botnets are used to flood websites with traffic (DDoS), send spam, try stolen passwords at scale, or hide criminals' traffic.

Poorly secured IoT devices are a favourite recruit: the 2016 Mirai botnet took over cameras and routers using their default passwords.

Change default passwords, keep devices updated, and you make it much harder for yours to be drafted.
