What should you do if a deepfake nude is going round?

If a deepfake nude is going round, don't open, save or forward it, because sharing it hurts the person again and images of under-18s are illegal even when AI-made. Report it in the app, note who posted it and where, and tell a trusted adult. Let the person targeted know it's not their fault.

▶ Try it

Why it matters

AI apps can turn an ordinary photo into a fake nude image. The picture is fake, but the shame, bullying and fear are real. Knowing what to do lets you stop the chain and stand by the person targeted.

In 6 minutes you'll be able to

  • Deepfake nudes are abuse, even though they're fake.
  • Don't open, don't forward, don't save. Report it and involve adults.
  • It's never the victim's fault. Free services help get images removed.

What you'll practise

  1. Year group chat

Something gets shared in your year group chat. Decide what you do.

    Year 11 📚 · 87 members

    • Josh: yo have u lot seen the amira thing?? 👀
    • Josh shared a link.
    • Zain: wait is that real?
    • Sophie: def made with one of those ai apps
    • Josh: whatever, send it round 😂
    1. An AI-faked nude image of Amira is going round the year group chat. What do you do?

      • Have a quick look and send it to my best mate
Almost. Every forward hurts Amira again, and with under-18s, sharing it is itself a crime. “Just one person” is still sharing.
      • Comment “lol that looks so fake”
Almost. You want to show it's not real, but every comment keeps it going and gets more people to open the link.
      • Don't open it, don't forward it, and post in the group (Answer)
Strong. You stop the chain and make it clear it's not okay. Others often follow.
        • You: that's fake and it's abuse. delete it, now. and don't send it on.
        • Zain: true, sorry. didn't send it to anyone
        • Josh: chill, it's not even real
        • Sophie: it still does real damage tho. stop it josh
    2. Chat with Amira

You message Amira privately. What do you write?

      • “Hey, I saw what's going on. It's fake and it's not your fault. I'm here.” (Answer)
Exactly right. More than anything, Amira needs to feel she's not alone.
        • You: hey, i saw what's going on. it's fake and absolutely not your fault. i'm here ❤️
        • Amira: i don't want to go to school anymore. everyone's seen it 😭
        • Amira: thanks for messaging
      • “Why do you have so many public photos anyway?”
Almost. That sounds like Amira is partly to blame. The only people to blame are whoever made and shared the fake.
      • “Just ignore it, it'll blow over.”
Almost. It's well meant, but Amira won't feel taken seriously. And it won't blow over while nobody reports it.
    3. Amira agrees that you should do something. What makes sense now?

      • Save the image so we've got evidence
Almost. Please don't: saving or forwarding the image can itself be a crime, even “as evidence”. Note down who posted it, when and in which chat instead.
      • Report the post in the app and note who posted it, when and where (Answer)
Right. Reporting helps stop the image, and your notes help adults and the police.
        • 🚩 Post reported. Group, time and sender noted, without saving the image.
      • Find out who did it and call them out publicly
Almost. That can escalate things and put Amira even more in the spotlight. Leave that to adults and the police.
    4. This is too big to sort out alone. Who do you bring in?

      • Amira's parents and the head of year (Answer)
Great. School and parents can involve the police and protect Amira.
        • You: shall we tell your parents and the head of year together? i'll come with you
      • A trusted teacher or the school counsellor (Answer)
Great. They can help bring in parents and the police.
        • You: let's go and see the school counsellor tomorrow. she'll know what to do
      • Nobody, it'll only make it more embarrassing
Almost. That feeling makes sense, but without adults the image can keep spreading. Getting help protects Amira.
    • Amira: okay. together. thank you 🙏
    • The school involves the police. The post is taken down.
  2. What's true?

Three questions that come up a lot.

    1. “It's not real, so it's not a problem.” Is that true?

      • No. For the person targeted, the harm is real. (Answer)
      • Yes, everyone knows it's AI.
    2. Is it a crime to make or share an image like this?

      • Yes. Sexual images of under-18s are illegal, even AI fakes. (Answer)
      • Only if you make money from it.
      • No, because it's not a real photo.
    3. It happens to you. What helps?

      • Report it, ask for it to be removed, tell an adult you trust (Answer)
      • Wait until nobody's looking at it anymore
  3. What you can do

Whether you see it or it happens to you: these steps help.

    ⛔ Don't open, don't share
Never create, never forward, never save, not even “as evidence”. That's how you stop the chain.
    🚩 Report and remove
Report it in the app. Report Remove (Childline and the IWF, UK) and Take It Down (NCMEC, US) help get images of under-18s removed.
    🤝 Support and tell
Tell the person it's not their fault. Bring in a trusted adult; the school and police can act.
    💜 It happened to you?
It's not your fault and you won't get in trouble. Talk to someone: Childline 0800 1111 (UK) or call or text 988 (US).

Remember

Never create, never forward. If it happens to you: report it and tell someone.

Never create, never forward. Report it and tell someone.

Questions people ask

Is it illegal to make a deepfake nude of someone?

If the person is under 18, making, sharing or keeping it is illegal in the UK and the US, even when it's AI-generated. Sharing intimate deepfakes of adults without consent is also a crime in both countries.

What should I do if someone made a fake nude of me?

It's not your fault and you won't get in trouble. Don't reply to the person who made it, report it in the app, tell a trusted adult, and use Report Remove (UK) or Take It Down (US) to get it removed.

What are nudify apps?

Nudify apps use AI to make a clothed photo look like a nude image of that person. Using them on someone without consent is abuse, and on under-18s it creates illegal images.

Should I screenshot a deepfake as evidence?

No. Saving or forwarding a sexual image of an under-18 can itself be a crime. Note who posted it, when and where, report it, and let adults and the police handle the evidence.
